Wu and Carter ESSIC 2014 Peer Award Winners

As part of ESSIC’s end-of-year holiday gathering, the Center continued the annual tradition of recognizing the accomplishments of its own faculty and staff, with two peer-based award for “Best Scientific Research Paper” and “Staff Employee of the Year.”

The award for best paper was presented to Assistant Research Scientist Huan Wu.

Wu’s paper entitled, “Real-time global flood estimation using satellite-based precipitation and a coupled land surface and routing model” was published in Water Resources Research. This study reports a real-time global flood monitoring system that has been implemented at ESSIC/University of Maryland. The system can provide global real-time streamflow information, and detect floods and their intensity globally by using satellite-based precipitation estimates. In addition to its scientific significance, the study has tremendous societal and economic impact.

The ESSIC Staff Award went to ESSIC EBO Coordinator Linda Carter.  The committee recognized Carter for her “hard work, diligence and dedication to the ESSIC staff and research faculty, particularly her dedication to human resources and her work in support of immigration issues.”
