Ferraro Joins PTK Working Group

ESSIC Associate Director Ralph Ferraro is a member of the new Professional Track (PTK) Working Group, a committee composed of PTK and Tenure Track (TTK) faculty, staff and administrators on behalf of Provost Jennifer King Rice to review and assess current issues related to PTK faculty. The goal of the Working Group is to develop a report of recommendations to Provost Rice on PTK issues.

Congratulations to Isaac Moradi, Newly Elected Member of the University State Senate

ESSIC/CISESS Research Scientist Isaac Moradi has been elected to the University State Senate as one of the Professional-Track Faculty members. The University Senate, composed of faculty, staff, students, and administrators, is one of the largest and most influential governing bodies at the University of Maryland. As a member of the senate, Moradi will help advise the University President on campus policy matters and concerns, including education, budget, personnel, campus-community, long range plans, facilities, and faculty, staff and student affairs.

James Farquhar Named Chair of UMD’s Department of Geology

Distinguished University Professor James Farquhar has been named the chair of the University of Maryland’s Department of Geology for five years, effective July 1, 2021. Farquhar holds a joint appointment at ESSIC and is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences. Farquhar succeeds Richard Walker, who served as department chair since 2016.

Farquhar Named 2020 UMD Distinguished University Professor

Professor James Farquhar of the University of Maryland (UMD) Department of Geology and the Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) has been named a 2020 UMD Distinguished University Professor. The title of Distinguished University Professor is the highest academic honor bestowed by the university. Considered a national achievement, this award given to just 7% of tenured faculty honors impact and significant contribution to the nominee’s field, knowledge, profession, and/or practice.
