Vogel and Abecassis Teach Class for Fisheries Research Community

Ron Vogel, ESSIC/CISESS Senior Faculty Specialist, and Melanie Abecassis, ESSIC/CISESS Assistant Research Scientist, designed and taught a specially tailored NOAA CoastWatch satellite training class for the fisheries research community. The fishery researchers use tagged fish to understand population dynamics and ecosystem change; however, use of satellite data in this research is still somewhat limited. In order to fill this gap, the class featured satellite parameters that are underutilized in this research but have been identified by the fisheries community as an area for research growth, such as satellite-derived seascapes, geostrophic currents, sea surface height anomaly and salinity.

CISESS Welcomes Summer Interns in 2022

This past summer, ESSIC’s Cooperative Institute for Satellite Earth System Studies (CISESS) welcomed 22 interns to assist in the research of 24 ESSIC/CISESS scientists. Of the interns, three were graduate students, 14 were undergraduates and five were high school students. Several of these students were returning interns from previous semesters.

ESSIC/CISESS Scientists Attended the 2022 NOAA CoRP Science Symposium

CISESS sponsored two early career scientists, Drs. Malar Arulraj and Daile Zhang, to attend the 2022 Cooperative Research Program (CoRP) Science Symposium, which was held in person on July 25th to 27th at the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA) of Colorado State University located in Fort Collins, CO.

On Tuesday, July 12, the College Park area was ravaged by three storm complexes fueled by the influx of hot and humid air and powered by strong high-altitude winds. The storms brought down countless trees and caused thousands of people to lose power. ESSIC scientist Will Miller provides some commentary on the storm’s trajectory and intensification.

Dutch Delegation Visits ESSIC

On June 21, ESSIC hosted a delegation from the Dutch Space Innovation Mission, a consortium of government, academic, and industry sectors organized by the Netherlands Space Office. The meeting was coordinated by the University of Maryland Office of International Affairs and the Netherlands Embassy. The delegation consists of directors, lead engineers and business developers of the Dutch space sector focusing on new space and upstream high-tech components and equipment, knowledge institutes and representatives of the Netherlands Space Office including the director. For this visit, they sought to meet with technology specialists and high-level representatives in the US space ecosystem.

Lightning as an Indicator of Climate

ESSIC/CISESS scientist Daile Zhang attended and presented at the National Climate Assessment (NCA) “Lightning as an Indicator of Climate” Annual Science Meeting that was held on June 6-7 at the UMD Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science (AOSC) Atlantic Building. The meeting is an annual working group get-together for people from NASA, University of Arizona, City College of New York, University of Alabama in Huntsville, and University of Maryland on various lightning tasks/projects, including lightning climatology, lightning NOx observations, dry lightning, wildfires, and this year’s NASA Marshall Space Flight Center CubeSpark project.

Gassó Teaches in Virtual Summer School

ESSIC Scientist Santiago Gassó participated as speaker in and chaired several sessions during the Surface-Ocean Lower Atmosphere Study (SOLAS) Summer virtual school, which was held June 13-17,2022. He taught a remote sensing module on June 13, chaired the Atmospheric deposition and ocean biogeochemistry session, and co hosted the Science Writing and Social media Workshop on June 14. He was also a judge for all poster sessions and a photography competition held throughout the week.
