Last month, the American Geophysical Union (AGU) held its annual Fall meeting from December 11 to 15. ESSIC scientists presented and attended both virtually and in-person in San Francisco, CA. The following is a sample (not all-encompassing) of the ESSIC/CISESS talks, presentations, and posters given at the event.
Recently, researchers from NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction (NCWCP) and University of Maryland gathered for a mini-conference to share presentations from recent conferences such as the American Geophysical Union (AGU) and American Meteorological Society (AMS) annual meetings.
CISESS sponsored two early career scientists, Drs. Malar Arulraj and Daile Zhang, to attend the 2022 Cooperative Research Program (CoRP) Science Symposium, which was held in person on July 25th to 27th at the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA) of Colorado State University located in Fort Collins, CO.
GEO Blue Planet, a network of ocean and coastal-observers, social scientists and end-user representatives, will hold its 5th Symposium from October 24-28, 2022. It will take place in-person in Accra, Ghana with a virtual component. This year’s theme will focus on GEO Blue Planet’s core actions areas, “capacity development, stakeholder engagement & cooperation & co-design driving sustained ocean and coastal observations for society”.
ESSIC/CISESS had several talks, e-lightning sessions, posters, virtual town halls, and tutorials at this year’s American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting, held in New Orleans and online from December 13 to 17.
ESSIC Associate Research Scientist Santiago Gassó was a keynote speaker at the international Blowing South: Southern Hemisphere Dust Symposium held November 8-10, 2021 and organized virtually from Chile. The talk was given during the Present-day: Dynamics session and it was entitled “Southern South America dust activity in relation to long range transport to Antarctica and the Southern Ocean”. No recording was taken of the talk, but slides are available upon request.
Last month, researchers from the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) and the University of Maryland (UMD) Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) gathered to explore the challenges and opportunities in applying machine learning and artificial intelligence in Earth systems science.
Isaac Moradi (ESSIC/GMAO) presented a talk entitled “Assimilation of microwave radiances over the rainbands of tropical cyclones” in the WCRP-WWRP Joint Symposium on Data Assimilation and Reanalysis.
To embrace the rapidly evolving field of AI/ML, ESSIC launches the ESSIC AI Forum and a one-day workshop: “On the Pathway to a Digital Earth”.
