ESSIC/CISESS Scientist and Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science Professor Dr. Jonathan Poterjoy has recently examined the fidelity of error assumptions made by regional weather prediction systems using a novel technique that avoids common approximations.
Web of Science has honored Dr. Zhanqing Li, Professor at ESSIC and University of Maryland’s Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science, as a Highly Cited Researcher, an honor bestowed to fewer than 6,200, or about 0.1%, of the world’s researchers, in 21 research fields and across multiple fields.
In 1986, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), chemical compounds known to break down ozone in the atmosphere, were banned by the Montreal Protocol. This led to an immediate rapid decline in emissions. However, recent studies have shown that CFC-11 emissions have increased, suggesting a contribution from eastern Asia.
ESSIC/CISESS scientist Sinéad Farrell is one of the contributors to the new “State of the Climate in 2020: The Arctic”, released by the American Meteorological Society (AMS) in the August 2021 issue of the monthly bulletin (BAMS). She co-authored the section on sea ice extent.
Youtong Zheng, ESSIC Assistant Research Scientist, and Zhanqing Li, Professor at ESSIC and University of Maryland’s Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science, were recently spotlighted in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) annual report for their paper, “Episodes of Warm‐Air Advection Causing Cloud‐Surface Decoupling During the MARCUS”.
Dr. Zhanqing Li, Professor at ESSIC and University of Maryland’s Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science, recently joined the editorial board of Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics, a not-for-profit international scientific journal dedicated to the publication and public discussion of high-quality studies investigating the Earth’s atmosphere and the underlying chemical and physical processes.
A paper co-authored by ESSIC Research Scientist William Lau, Professor Zhanqing Li, scientist Weichen Tao, and AOSC Graduate Student Lei Zhang was recently published in Geophysical Research Letters.
