The Ecological Society of America (ESA) announced March 23 that their ESA Innovations in Sustainability Science Award will be given to ESSIC researcher Ariana Sutton-Grier.
The award winning article, co-authored by Sutton-Grier, was published in Environmental Science and Policy in 2015 and is titled “Future of our coasts: The potential for natural and hybrid infrastructure to enhance the resilience of our coastal communities, economies and ecosystems.” The article considers natural infrastructure, built infrastructure and combinations of the two, dubbed “hybrid” approaches, in relation to coastal benefits including storm and coastal flooding protection.
Sutton-Grier will receive the award this August during a ceremony at the 101st annual ESA meeting located in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
The theme of this year’s award ceremony is “Novel Ecosystems in the Anthropocene.” According to esa.org, the meeting will “support sessions that explore how ecosystem structure and function respond to multiple drivers of change, how resource managers can cope with developing novel ecosystems, and potential benefits and problems that society will face as we progress into the Anthropocene Epoch.”
