State of Maryland Officials Briefed on UMD Climate Research Capabilities
COLLEGE PARK, MD – On April 1, the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and the University of Maryland (UMD) welcomed the Honorable Nancy Kopp, Treasurer of the State of Maryland, and Deputy State Treasurer, Susanne Brogan, for a briefing on environmental and climate research programs at the University of Maryland Research Park (M-Square).
UMD President Wallace Loh, UMD Provost MaryAnn Rankin, PNNL Associate Laboratory Director Douglas Ray, and UMD CMNS Dean Jayanth Banavar were among the attendees who participated in the discussion.
The briefing aimed to familiarize the state officials with the unique climate research capabilities of PNNL and UMD and to underscore the potential benefit of closer partnerships with the State.
The meeting was co-hosted by PNNL’s Joint Global Change Research Institute (JGRCI) and UMD’s Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC). JGCRI Director Ghassem Asrar and ESSIC Director Antonio Busalacchi jointly chaired the event.
Treasurer Kopp noted with enthusiasm at the conclusion of the discussion that with such depth of expertise in climate science, there was great potential to harness these resources for the benefit of the State and the nation.
