First CICS Science Conference Held at UMD

COLLEGE PARK, MD – The Cooperative Institute for Climate and Satellites (CICS) held its first collaborative Science Conference from November 29, 2016 – December, 1, 2016.  The three day event hosted by the University of Maryland (UMD) Earth System Sciences Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) evolved from and replaced the former CICS-Maryland annual science meeting.

The conference included representation from principal partners CICS-Maryland and CICS-North Carolina as well as CUNY’s Cooperative Remote Sensing Science and Technology Center (CREST), a consortium member of the institute.  It was the first time the members had collaborated in a joint-conference setting.

The meeting informed on the vast activities being carried out by the Institute’s members and revealed a number of complementary topics that will be explored for better integration.

The event also culminated in the renewal of the CICS Council of Fellows (COF) program, which serves as a vehicle for the institute’s concept development, its program strategy, and to help achieve the overarching goal of regional and disciplinary integration.

Integrated by members of the institute, faculty of the associated academic units, NOAA scientists, and other relevant scientists, the COF is intended to help consolidate current research themes, integrate activities across groups, and explore new needs to serve the NOAA mission.
