Dr. Kevin Trenberth

Tuesday February 16, 2021, 3 PM EST
NOTE: The webinar is at 3 PM EST instead of the typical time since the speaker will be joining us from New Zealand with a time zone difference.
Earth’s energy imbalance is caused by increasing greenhouse gases and its partitioning between atmospheric, ocean, cryosphere and land heat reservoirs govern the consequences and rate at which the climate evolves. Most of the imbalance, over 90%, goes into the ocean and accordingly ocean heat content (OHC) provides a primary indicator of climate change, along with sea level rise. On land and in the atmosphere, major changes occur in extremes of the water cycle and storms with prospects for more intense droughts, heat waves and wildfires, as well as heavy rains and flooding. By adopting a holistic approach that includes top-of-atmosphere radiation, atmospheric and ocean energy transports, and surface fluxes, closure of the energy and water cycles on regional scales can be achieved. Addressing the major challenges would provide a way to advance the science and prediction of climate.
Kevin Trenberth, from New Zealand, is a Distinguished Scholar at NCAR and an Honorary Academic in Auckland University, New Zealand. He worked for NCAR for 35 years, and played a major leadership role in IPCC and the WCRP for more than 20 years. He is a fellow of the AMS, AAAS, AGU, and an honorary fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand Te Apārangi and has received a number of awards. From 1996 until 2019 he ranked first in the number of highly cited papers out of all 223,246 published environmental scientists.
The New Book Debut and Free Book Giveaway:
We are excited to welcome Dr. Trenberth as he debuts his new book, “The Changing Flow of Energy Through the Climate System”, which is published by Cambridge University Press with an expected publication date of August 2021. The book foreword is written by Al Gore, the former vice president of the United States. A free book will be given to one lucky attendee.
