From September 2 to October 10, Dr. Berbery will work at Universidad Nacional del Litoral in Argentina on a project that aims to exchange knowledge and establish partnerships benefiting participants, institutions, and communities both in the U.S. and overseas through a variety of educational and training activities within environmental science.

At Universidad Nacional del Litoral, Dr. Berbery will work with local scientists to explore the potential and limitations of satellites and high-resolution climate models to observe and simulate the water cycle. He will also contribute to the planning and organization of an international workshop or summer school hosted locally and focused on Latin American students. Finally, he will review the current master and doctoral programs related to water resources that are offered by our institution.

“I’m excited to contribute to the great work being done at Universidad Nacional del Litoral,” says Dr. Berbery, “There are many similarities to the work done at UMD and CISESS, and I hope this opportunity will increase global collaboration.”

Dr. Berbery is one of over 400 U.S. citizens who share expertise with host institutions abroad through the Fulbright Specialist Program each year. Recipients of Fulbright Specialist awards are selected on the basis of academic and professional achievement, demonstrated leadership in their field, and their potential to foster long-term cooperation between institutions in the U.S. and abroad.

Dr. Berbery has research interests in large scale dynamics, regional hydroclimate variability, and land surface-atmosphere interactions. He uses regional models and diagnostic approaches to investigate the regional mechanisms of the American monsoon systems, and the effects of land-cover changes and land surface-atmosphere feedbacks on the hydroclimate and extremes of the Americas.

The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to build lasting connections between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. Fulbrighters address critical global issues in all disciplines, while building relationships, knowledge, and leadership in support of the long-term interests of the United States.
