Chafik Study on Decadal Oceanic Variability Published

Research Associate Leon Chafik was the lead author for a study published on October 21st in Geophysical Research Letters. The paper, written by leading climate change and variability scientists, connects the subpolar North Atlantic Ocean (SPNA) warming with the increased Arctic sea ice loss. The researchers found the SPNA ocean variability is necessary for tropical interactions between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Chafik and Matthew England wrote the highlight published by the US Climate Variability and Predictability (CLIVAR) Program to explain more of the researchers’ findings.
