ESSIC/CISESS Scientists Zhipeng Wang, Fangfang Yu, Hyelim Yoo, Haifeng Qian and Xi Shao have been honored with a SPIE Journal of Applied Remote Sensing 2020 Best Papers Award for their article, “On-orbit calibration and characterization of GOES-17 ABI IR bands under dynamic thermal conditions”.
ESSIC Post-doctoral Associate Thomas Overly is a co-author on a new paper in Geophysical Research Letters titled, “Atmospheric Blocking Drives Recent Albedo Change Across the Western Greenland Ice Sheet Percolation Zone”. Overly is among co-authors from Dartmouth College, Boise State University, Colby College, and University of New Hampshire.
ESSIC Associate Research Scientist Toshihisa Matsui is a co-author on a new international paper in Climate titled “Convection Parametrization and Multi-Nesting Dependence of a Heavy Rainfall Event over Namibia with Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model”. In the study, Matsui and international co-authors investigate the effects of using multi-nests and a convection scheme, numerical weather prediction models, on the simulation of a heavy rainfall event over the north-western region of Kunene, Namibia.
NOAA Coral Reef Watch (CRW)’s operational daily global 5km satellite coral bleaching heat stress products are being used by Arizona State University (ASU) and its partners to create a new Bleaching layer (currently in beta status) in the Allen Coral Atlas. The Bleaching layer, which is updated every two weeks, detects variations in coral reef brightness using high-resolution Planet Dove satellite visible-band imagery and an advanced algorithm, to indicate whether reefs are experiencing heat stress, such as that from marine heatwaves, and bleaching.
ESSIC Visiting Research Scientist Xuesong Zhang is lead author on a recent study that simulated the environmental impacts from the conversion of grassland to corn and soybeans for 12 US Midwestern states using the EPIC (Environmental Policy Integrated Climate) model. The paper’s co-authors include Tyler J Lark, Christopher M Clark, Yongping Yuan, and Stephen D LeDuc.
ESSIC/CISESS Scientist Liqing Jiang led the development of a new data set called the Coastal Ocean Data Analysis Product in North America (CODAP-NA). It is an internally consistent data product for discrete inorganic carbon, oxygen, and nutrients on the U.S. North American ocean margins. CODAP-NA is one of the first major coastal ocean acidification (OA) data products. Its coverage includes all ocean margins of the conterminous United States, as well as part of Alaska. It will help the U.S. prepare OA mitigation and adaptation strategies. This collaborative effort is also a showcase example of NCEI/CISESS taking a leading role in a major synthesis effort involving NOAA labs (AOML and PMEL) and academic institutions (University of Maine, University of New Hampshire, University of Delaware, University of Miami, University of Alaska at Fairbanks, and Georgetown University). Earth System Science Data accepted an article on CODAP-NA on May 2. CISESS Scientist Alex Kozyr is a co-author.
ESSIC/CISESS Senior Faculty Specialist Ron Vogel, Operations Manager for the East Coast Node, was recently recognized and highly praised for his contributions to the NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office to identify satellite derived products that support habitat and fisheries management applications.
ESSIC/CISESS Associate Research Scientist Isaac Moradi is the PI of a proposal selected by NASA ROSES to assimilate measurements from active spaceborne radars into NASA GEOS model. The project will benefit from CloudSat CPR and GPM DPR observations and will be conducted in collaboration with Co-Is from NASA Global Modeling and Assimilation Office and the Mesoscale Atmospheric Processes Laboratory.
ESSIC/CISESS Post-doctoral Associate Daile Zhang was recently featured by The National Lightning Safety Council to discuss her role in the lightning safety effort. In the feature, Zhang talks about what drew her to lightning, specific projects she’s working on, and the future of lightning research.
