6th WMO International Symposium carries on in spite of closure

AOSC Assistant Professor Kayo Ide and ESSIC Director and ConE Chair, Professor Antonio Busalacchi were part of the local organizing committee of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) 6th International Symposium on Data Assimilation. The event was held from October 7 – 11, 2013 and included representatives from 15 countries and over 300 registered participants.

The meeting went forth as scheduled in spite of several logistical hurdles necessitated by the two-week federal government closure during early October. This included both venue relocation to the University’s Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center and the relocation of the meeting website to a server provided by UMD ESSIC.

Both the university and the organizing committee received considerable recognition from the international attendees for making the symposium a success and saving it from cancellation.

University Vice President of Research Pat O’Shea presented the welcome remarks at the symposium dinner. The College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences (CMNS) and its members AOSC, CSCAMM, ESSIC, and IPST were sponsors of the Symposium in partnership with WMO, NOAA, and NASA.
